Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has firmly dismissed speculations that he plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that he remains committed to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) despite the party’s internal challenges.
Makinde spoke on Wednesday in Abuja, where he made it clear that he had no intention of joining the ruling party, even as some PDP governors and lawmakers have crossed over to the APC.
“I am not an APC member and I am not about to port to the APC,” the governor said, putting to rest rumours surrounding his political future.
He stressed that partisan politics should not overshadow the need for national unity and collaboration, noting that Nigeria’s development depends on leaders working together across party lines rather than engaging in political opportunism.
Makinde also criticised what he described as the growing culture of political division driven by elite interests, arguing that ordinary Nigerians desire unity and peaceful coexistence rather than constant political realignments.
According to him, the “winner-takes-all” approach to governance has weakened national cohesion and encouraged exclusion, urging political leaders to embrace fairness and inclusive leadership.
The Oyo governor’s remarks come amid ongoing leadership disputes within the PDP, which have fuelled speculation about possible defections ahead of future elections.
In recent months, the APC has received several high-profile defectors from opposition parties, intensifying political calculations nationwide.
Makinde’s declaration signals his resolve to remain in the PDP and navigate its challenges rather than abandon the party.
